In order to compare the differences between the internal and external market structure of the small urban inbound tourism destinations, this article draws on the O-D (Origin-Destination) model of the regional traffic network planning, and then puts forward a inbound tourism O-D model which can reveal the market change processes of the inbound tourism destinations from three dimensions. This article taking two city-destination, Hong Kong, China and Singapore city as examples, analyzed the changes in both internal market structure and external market scale using the statistical data from the year 2005 to 2016. At the same time, the article also constructed two matrices which called “market importance-travel preference” and “market share-travel preference” to compare the market changes of Hong Kong and Singapore. The results showed that from the internal view, the centralization level of Hong Kong’s inbound market has improved in the past 10 years, while the Singapore’s inbound sustained to be more diversity than Hong Kong. In conclusion, this article also discussed the important significance of the O-D modeling for choosing the right inbound market strategy and the pros and cons of concentration and diversity as inbound tourism market polices for different size inbound tourism destinations.

The Chinese outbound travel market has been one of the fastest-growing international markets over the past decade. However, estimating the size and identifying key tourist-generating areas for the Chinese travel market remain a significant challenge for international marketers. This empirical study employs an incidental target-market approach and presents updated research findings concerning this burgeoning market. Primary and secondary tourist-generating cities of Mainland China were identified based on population size and level of socioeconomic development, and their market potential for outbound travel was assessed through a large-scale telephone survey. This study estimated that the current Chinese outbound travel market comprises approximately 22 million city residents, among whom 11.5 million have traveled or plan to travel to destinations outside Asia. In addition to estimating market size and making recommendations on target cities, the study also introduces an effective research design for identifying target markets and customers.

The process of regionalization in Europe has attracted little attention in tourist studies, which tend to focus on the comparison between national statistics. By analysing the inter-regional and intra-regional tourist flows within Europe, the geographical pattern of tourist-destination and touristgenerating areas becomes clear and this allows for a realistic assessment of the position and potentials of particular destination areas within the European tourism market, where competition is no longer between countries but between regions. Despite the lack of consensus on the definition of a ‘region’ and the statistical problems of studying tourist flows on a regional level, the results of this analysis indicate some relevant characteristics of the European tourism market and open interesting perspectives for future research on regional tourism development.

Among the major overseas tourism markets for Singapore (besides the neighbouring ASEAN countries), Japan is the second largest. The number of Japanese visitors to Singapore had increased from 0.38 million in 1985 to 0.84 million in 1998, an increase of almost 121 per cent. In terms of the share of Japanese tourists in the domestic tourism market, it had only increased from 12.4 to 13.5 per cent. To attract more Japanese visitors, it helps to have a clear understanding of the pattern of Japanese tourist arrivals so that different promotion strategies can be devised and implemented. In this paper, we analyzed the pattern of arrivals by focusing on seasonal indices. The study found that the seasonal indices of Japanese tourist arrivals are stable over time. Policy implications of the finding were also discussed.

This paper investigates the impact of migration on Italian inbound tourism flows in a dynamic panel data framework. Arrivals, expenditure and nights from 65 countries are analysed for the period 2005鈥2011. The migration variable is defined at both origin and destination in order to assess the pushing and pulling forces. Estimates were performed using both aggregated flows and flows disaggregated to separate the visiting friends and relatives (VFRs) from two non-VFR categories, namely holiday and business. The results suggest the presence of a strong migration-tourism nexus, which clearly goes beyond VFRs. Moreover, the effects of the different determinants vary according to the way in which the tourism market is segmented and, within each segment, to the way in which tourism demand is measured.

This paper examines the dynamic changes in the number of tourists arriving in Australia from 53 markets using monthly data (1991m1-2014m4). A modified capital asset pricing model incorporating Markov switching and Bai-Perron search models is adopted to measure the extent to which individual arrival series exhibit systematic co-movements in relation to total arrivals as a global composite barometer. The study identifies 15 large and growing markets from different countries and regions with the switching/shifting betas greater than +1, suggesting a diverse portfolio that, if properly managed, will continue to sustain Australia's tourism industry. The study presents a series of marketing and promotion strategies to improve marketing efficiency and implications for further research are discussed.

A number of researchers in the marketing, management, and economics disciplines have expressed reservations regarding the validity and generalizability of the reported relationships between market share and profitability. Against this backdrop, the authors performed a meta-analysis on 276 market share-profitability findings from forty-eight studies to address whether market share and profitability are positively related and to examine the factors that moderate the magnitude of that relationship. The authors found that, on average, market share has a positive effect on business profitability. However, the magnitude of the market share-profitability relationship is moderated by model specification errors, sample characteristics, and measurement characteristics. The relationship is moderated the most (and, on average, the relationship could be artifactual) when firm-specific intangible factors are specified in the profit model or the estimate of the market share-profitability relationship is based on an analysis of non-PIMS businesses. The authors discuss the implications of these results for the evaluation and utilization of market share information by managers in reference to strategies that focus on building market share as a means for increasing profits.

Abstract To examine how parental limit setting, family conflict, and perception of family experience influence severity of alcohol and drug problems, and important gender differences in these relationships, we interviewed consecutive intakes, aged 12 to 18 years, at 4 chemical dependency programs of a large group-model nonprofit health maintenance organization (HMO) (n=419). The Family Conflict, Limit Setting, and Positive Family Experience scales correlated with substance dependence (p<0.01, p<0.01, p<0.05, respectively). Depression also correlated with family conflict (p<0.01), absence of limit setting (p<0.01), poor family experience (p<0.01) and dependence symptoms (p<0.01). Number of substance-using friends correlated with number of dependence symptoms (p<0.01). Gender differences included the following: (1) girls scoring higher in family conflict (p=0.0002), negative perceptions of family experience (p<0.0017), and lower in absence of limit setting (p<0.0001); (2) how family environment predicted problem severity: absence of limit setting was significant for boys and girls but family conflict for boys only; (3) girls had more dependence symptoms (p=<0.0001), psychiatric diagnoses (e.g., depression (p<0.0003), anxiety (p<0.0002), conduct disorder (p=0.07)), and substance-abusing family members (53 % versus 39%; p=0.006). To conclude, family and peers influence severity of alcohol and drug problems in adolescents.

Competitive balance in sports leagues is essentially concerned with inequality in match and championship outcomes. Measures of inequality or concentration from the income distribution and industrial organization literatures have, therefore, often been used to measure competitive balance. This paper focuses on the use of the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) applied to wins. It is shown that variation in the number of teams in the league affects not only the lower bound but also the upper bound of the HHI. An expression is derived for the upper bound and a normalized measure of the HHI, applicable to wins, is proposed. The differences this can make in practice when tracking variations in competitive balance over time are illustrated by considering Depken's (1999) application of the HHI to Major League Baseball.
